All-Music Guide Biography
An American rock band consisting of Jim Morrison (vocals), Robbie
Krieger (guitar), John Densmore (drums), and Ray Manzarek (organ and
keyboard bass). Starting as a frat/R&B band on campus at UCLA, they
evolved into something resembling performance art under the sway of
poet and vocalist Morrison. His lyrics, free-form associations, and
demonic stage energy were startling to pop audiences of the time,
earning the band much chart success and a devoted following. When
Morrison died in 1971, the band became a legendary icon of its time,
one that has continued unabated thanks to their frequent rotation on
classic-rock-format radio and to Oliver Stone's film based on their

Just about everything the first-time buyer could want by this
legendary 60s band -- two CDs, no filler. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
A well-chosen, 19-track compilation balancing the radio hits with the
longer, more complex song poems. It's a good sampler (and contains
enough of the good tracks from STRANGE DAYS that we didn't bother to
list that album separately), but this is one group for whom you need

One of the most remarkable debut albums in rock history introduced the
powerful singing of Jim Morrison, his provocative lyrics, and the
group's spare, direct guitar/organ sound. "Light My Fire" became an
instant standard but the album also contained such Doors classics as
"Break On Through (To the Other Side)," "Twentieth Century Fox," and,
of course, that Oedipal odyssey "The End." (DCC Compact Classics has a

The Doors could be erratic live, as this double CD shows. Still, it's
a fair example of their in-concert charms. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
Although I'm a strong and unapologetic supporter of Jim Morrison -- I
think he was one of rock and roll's most charismic and distinctive
vocalists -- what we get here is a man in a state of artistic and
physical disintegration. I think it's fair to say that not a single
track ... wasn't performed better on the studio LPs, making this set

Their last album with Morrison, this was something of a comeback. The
title track and "Riders on the Storm" remain favorites. ~ Jeff

An underrated, if at time pretentious, album. The title suite is
ambitious. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
Probably the most underrated Doors collection because the addition of
horns and strings ("Wishful Sinful") turns it into a more exploratory
album than their more basic music usually attempted. But "Tell All the
People" is the group at its most revolutionary, and the long title
track is among its most ambitious. This included the hit "Touch Me" as
well as "Wild Child," one of their best rockers. ~ William Ruhlmann

While their third album includes some of their best known songs, it
also has a few throwaways. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
Singles like "Hello, I Love You" and "The Unknown Soldier" are on THE
BEST OF THE DOORS (see below), but many of the standouts on this album
are gentle songs like "Summer's Almost Gone," "Yes, the River Knows,"
and "Wintertime Love," which demonstrate that Morrison & Co. can be
